The Lohse's came to Texas from Germany in the mid-1800's. German was spoken
in the home of my grandfather when he was growing up.

AUGUST
LOHSE was born June 01, 1861 in Dusseldorf, Germany1,
and died November 22, 1935 in Houston, Texas. In this picture, you can see that
one leg has been amputated. He was required to
register as an alien during WWI while his sons were serving in the army in
France. (1Source of info: State of Texas,

He
married DORETTA EMMA WOLFF in Rockdale, Texas, daughter of HENRIETTA. She was
born November 1876 in Texas or Germany (records differ), and died September 22,
1940 in Houston, Texas. The family story (unverified of course) is that he
started coming to the Wolff's house and they thought that he was interested in
Emma's older sister because he was older. But he was interested in Emma.
Apparently, she tried to run away down the railroad tracks on the night before
her wedding, but her family found her & brought her back. They were married &
had 4 children, but eventually he moved out of their home and she ran it as a
rooming house. (Source of info: State of Texas, birth certificate
for Walter Henry, Social Security death index., & Death Certificate for
Walter Henry.) |

WILLIS LOHSE, was born February 12, 1897; died May 1983, San Antonio,

He served in France during WWI and lived a
wild life as a young man. After he settled down, Ed worked for Hughes
Tool and Die in Houston until his retirement. He played dominos at a
domino parlor on the way home most days and supposedly made almost as
much from dominos as from his "real" job. |

He was married three times: |
(1) BESSIE HENSLEY MCCOY, Abt. 1915, in Texas. She was born July 27, 1897, in Gonzales Co.
Texas; died April 1981, in San Antonio, Texas;
(2) LORETTA
GRAHAM, Abt. 1940;
(3) BESSIE HENSLEY MCCOY, July 1964, San Antonio, Texas (This was their
second marriage to each other, they waited until Uncle Ed had retired); |
Here
is a picture of Bess in later years. On my recipe
page you can see how she looked as a young woman. |
